Genevieve Bell to examine the impact of artificial intelligence, data and technology on humanity.
Plus 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng joins local and international experts in AI, Robotics, Augmented Biology and Space
Experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented biology, and space are set to converge at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 23 – 24 July for the Hybrid World Adelaide (HWA) Tech Conference.
Curated by returning Hybrid World Adelaide Creative Director, the award-winning author and digital pioneer Robert Tercek; the conference is set to explore, discuss and showcase the future of industries featuring an array of local and international thought leaders including international business leader, award winning speaker and author of ‘The Finnish Miracle’ André Noël Chaker.
André Noël Chaker will present a keynote examining what Australia can learn from innovative Finland, as well as how Santa, saunas and sisu make up the formula for success in life and business. His invaluable expertise will also be shared with applicants for the HWA LAB, where he will be a guest Mentor.
Joining André on the conference program and examining how humanity can prosper in a data-driven world is Australia’s Professor Genevieve Bell. Prof. Bell is one of the world’s leading technologists and a former South Australian Thinker in Residence. She has pioneered futurist research looking at how different cultures use technology and helped guide Intel’s product development by fine-tuning the company’s social science and design research capabilities. Prof. Bell is currently a Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University, as well as a Vice President and Senior Fellow at Intel. She was also appointed Director of the 3A Institute in 2017, launched by the ANU in collaboration with CSIRO's Data61. The Institute aims to build a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data, technology and their impact on humanity.
Also speaking at the conference is 2012 Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng, founder of Robogals Global and Aubot; Chief Scientist and Founder of Neumann Space Dr. Patrick ‘Paddy’ Neumann, who is developing the solar-electric plasma thruster which can run on nearly any metal found in asteroids; and Flinders University space archaeologist Dr. Alice Gorman, also known as ‘Dr. Space Junk’.
After a highly engaging 2017 keynote speech, Phillip Alvelda returns to chart the trajectory of machines that think, from the earliest prototypes of prosthetic limbs attached to the human nervous system to machines that can be controlled by human thought, and soon, machines that are conscious and aware. Phillip will also feature as a HWA LAB Mentor.

The Tech Conference is set to take place on 23 – 24 July at the Adelaide Convention Centre and will feature leading researchers, resident thinkers, local and international scientists, and showcase the finalists in the HWA LAB pitching for a share in $85,000 of development grants.
The South Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, The Hon David Ridgway, said Hybrid World Adelaide was an opportunity to extend South Australia’s reputation as a key tech destination for international guests and businesses alike.
“The new State Government has an ambition to make South Australia the start-up capital of Australia and a strong plan to foster entrepreneurship and innovation,” said Mr Ridgway.
“We want to bolster the state’s reputation as the forward-thinking centre of tech excellence in Australia.”
“The international programs offered at Hybrid World Adelaide showcase South Australia’s ability to continue to drive the future of investments in technological advancements which in turn, encourages our next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders to grow and develop their ideas and businesses in South Australia.”
Hybrid World Adelaide CEO Amanda Duthie said she hopes the 2018 conference program will provide a platform to discuss and explore future industry on both a local and global level.
“Our international and local guest speakers will inspire entrepreneurs and business people to think more broadly about how to achieve global scale, providing an opportunity to explore cutting-edge technology that is happening right here, right now and the possibilities that will shape our future industries.”
